excerpted from Breast Cancer: No One Chose This Journey
by Fran Padgett

Bonnie’s Challenge Bike Ride:

Beginning Point: Bonnie’s home in a north Houston subdivision
Finish Line: The Breast Center
14 miles; time not clocked
Date: March 23, 2006

“I thought I might have to stop to rest two or three times, but I didn’t. I rode the 14 miles without stopping. The wind was blowing across my face. I think it was the wind created by my whizzing along at the edge of the curb. Friends offered to drive me. They didn’t understand that this ride was my challenge to myself.

“Someone said a challenge bike race is one with no winners. But I won. I rode those 14 miles to my sixth and last chemotherapy treatment. I won.”
